1. Report to members on the Buderim Garden Festival Oct 15 & 16th 2016

We once again had a very successful Garden Festival this year even though the number of visitors was down and the number of exhibits entered in the Spring Flower Show was down when compared to last year. We were once again fortunate with the weather on the two days of our event however the days leading up to the Festival were not always ideal garden weather as we had days of wind and rain. . We were happy with the variety of Gardens that were opened this year. The quality of the display in the hall was great and the stall holders were happy with their exposure and trade.
As we had last year we were fortunate to have two generous sponsors. Manawee garden Center once again covered the cost of producing the tickets. The Bendigo Bank provided funds towards the cost hiring two buses on Saturday to take people to visit gardens and one bus on the Sunday. The club put in a further $300 to the cost of the buses.
As always it takes a team of many members to stage an event like the Buderim Garden Festival. I would like to thank all those who volunteered to sit on gardens, assisted with traffic control, manned stalls, sold raffle tickets, donated plants , acted as stewards, provided food, assisted with the computer, projector and audio system, assisted with the setting up of the hall as well as the clearing away. Thank you to all.
To everyone who entered exhibits to the Flower show a heartfelt thank you. Without entries we would not have a show.
To the Festival Committee a heartfelt thank you for everything you did to make the Festival a success especially John Sargaison who was new to the task of Show Steward and who did a splendid job. Now I’d like to ask John to present his report on the Spring Flower Show.
2. Buderim Garden Club 2016 Spring Flower Show Report by Show Steward,

In seven hours the Buderim Memorial Hall was transformed from an empty shell into a sea of colour and greenery. This was achieved by a small army of enthusiastic volunteers and by the many members who came along with one or more entries for the show. This year we had 67 classes on offer in the Show Schedule and we received 466 entries including 18 entries in the two Children Plant Art classes. It was pleasing to see a greater participation from the local schools this year.
The number of entries this year was down by approximately 14% in comparison with the 2015 Show. The reason(s) for the decline is not clear however windy conditions leading up to the show may have been a significant factor. Weather conditions are clearly beyond our control however there is an opportunity to encourage greater participation by providing more information and education to members on how to grow and prepare show quality plants and flowers in the months leading up to the Show.
While numbers of entries were down it was however pleasing to hear the Show Judges say that overall the quality of entries and their staging has improved over past years. Many visitors to the Show that I had the pleasure to speak with were also very complimentary on the variety and quality of the show exhibits. It is estimated that we had in the vicinity of 1,000 visitors to the Show over the two days, with just over $14,000 raised from ticket sales.
The official opening of the Show and presentation of prizes was again held at 2pm on Saturday and there were a number of visitors and members present in the hall to witness this. Marjorie Van Roy (Manawee Plant Nursery), our patron and sponsor and Peter McDonnell (Buderim Bendigo Community Bank) our other sponsor conducted the opening and presentations.
While there are many positives with the Show we did however identify a number of opportunities for improvement in particular with the management of the award winner processes and documentation that will be addressed.
In conclusion I would like to sincerely thank again the army of volunteers that assisted in any way with the running of what was a very successful show and one that the Club can be duly proud of.
3. FESTIVAL OPEN GARDENS REPORT by Laurel Asimus
Shirley Mc Donald, Kathy and John Lyon and Teddy and Ron Gove, all Garden Club members opened their gardens for public viewing this year. A wonderful effort considering the other responsibilities they had over the Festival weekend. All gardens had their unique qualities reflecting the owners interests, preferences and location challenges. Public comment in general was very favourable.
As usual the club donated $200 to each garden owner to help in preparing a colourful display, which is always appreciated by the owners.
Attendance at gardens :
Garden No 1 - had 542 visitors.
Garden No 2 - had 711 visitors.
Garden No 3 - had 733 visitors.
Garden No 4 - had 653 visitors.
Garden No 5 - had 598 visitors.
Garden No 6 - 649 visitors.
This year there was a significant increase in $5 ticket sales at some gardens, indicating a single garden visit.
This year we had 2x21 seater buses on Saturday which did 8 trips and 1 on Sunday doing 4 trips making a total of 12 trips to the Open Gardens from the Memorial Hall. A new approach this year was very well received viewing 3 gardens and returning to the hall. This worked much better for all and some people were able to see all gardens by taking a second trip. Mostly all seats were filled.
This service was free to ticket holders with thanks to the sponsorship again this year from Buderim Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank who contributed $1,500 with our club paying the balance of $300.
4. FESTIVAL STALLHOLDERS REPORT by Shirley McDonald
Once again we had 13 stallholders attending this year plus our own Club stall.
All those participating are a happy bunch who seem genuinely happy to be there and meet one another again. Some felt that Saturday was not as good as last year, but at the end of the Festival they all seemed happy with the way it turned out, and are happy to take part again next year.
Our Club stall did exceptionally well making almost $2000.00, which was up on last year.
A sincere thank you to the many Club members who contributed plants, and I must say that the quality was better than last year.
My thanks to stall workers, with a special thank you to Monika, Steve and Maxina for the number of hours they worked while I was at home talking to visitors to my garden.
5 FESTIVAL PUBLICITY REPORT by Bev Schouten
At the beginning of the year, the Festival information was put on over 30 websites, and these sites were progressively updated with the festival flyer and then where tickets could be bought.
Approx. 10 articles were in the printed media of newspapers and magazines.
Rosanna (and also the 6pm news) on Channel 7 and 104.9 FM gave coverage.
Although the publicity was essentially the same as last year, we were not treated to front page and full coverage of our Open Gardens in the local paper that we had enjoyed last year.
Redland Floral Art group and Bundaberg brought buses, but one of last year’s buses from Kempsey elected to go to a different Flower Show this year.
Numbers were down, but competition for event publicity and attendance is an on-going problem.
